Every season of Summer House eventually stops being about the Hamptons.

What begins as a show about attractive people drinking rosé in themed outfits inevitably becomes something else entirely. Beneath the parties, hookups and weekend drama, the series functions as a surprisingly effective study of modern adulthood. The cast may think they are navigating relationships, friendships and house politics, but what unfolds on screen often reveals much bigger questions about gender, race, mental health, masculinity, accountability and what it actually means to grow up.

That is why reality television remains one of the most misunderstood genres in popular culture. Critics dismiss it as shallow because they focus on the setting rather than the substance. Yet some of the most revealing conversations about power, identity, friendship and human behaviour now happen through reality television, precisely because the people involved are not reading from a script. The audience may arrive looking for entertainment, but they often leave debating questions that extend far beyond the cast themselves.

This season of Summer House was particularly revealing. Over the course of one summer and a reunion, the show became a lens through which viewers argued about the "good guy" myth, the politics of race and empathy, male vulnerability, mental health, healing after heartbreak, the friendships we outgrow and the friendships that save us. In the process, it revealed just as much about the audience watching as it did about the people on screen.

The West Wilson storyline revealed something far more interesting than the rise and fall of a reality television favourite. It revealed how quickly audiences attach themselves to an archetype.

After I wrote We All Know a West Wilson, readers flooded my messages with stories about different men who somehow sounded exactly the same. The details changed. Yet everyone seemed to recognise the character. West was never really one man. He was a type.

Every generation gets its version. The modern West Wilson isn’t the obvious cad of early 2000s television. He’s not Karl Mayer cheating his way across Wisteria Lane. He is softer, funnier and appears more self-aware. He goes to therapy. He understands the language of emotional intelligence. He knows what accountability is supposed to sound like. That is precisely what makes him difficult to spot.

The problem with men like this is not that they are obvious villains. It is that nobody seems to know the same version of them. To one woman, they are thoughtful. To another, they are avoidant. To one friend, they are loyal. To another, they are unreliable. They leave behind confusion rather than certainty, creating a maze of mixed messages, half-truths and contradictions that keep everyone trying to solve a puzzle that never quite fits together.

What made West particularly revealing this season was not simply his treatment of Ciara, but his admission that he had only recently begun to understand certain aspects of her experience as a Black woman. The statement was intended as growth, but it also raised an uncomfortable question. If you are only seeing that part of someone now, what exactly were you seeing before? Ciara did not become a Black woman in season ten. She was a Black woman in seasons eight and nine, too.

Perhaps that is why the audience reaction became so divided. The disappointment was never really about one failed relationship. It was about watching a fantasy collapse. West arrived as the internet’s favourite boyfriend and left as a reminder that charisma and character are not always the same thing.

If West represented a familiar male archetype, then Ciara represented something equally revealing: the impossible balancing act Black women are still expected to perform in public.

One of the most fascinating things about Ciara’s time on Summer House is how often she has been asked to carry contradictions that would break most people. She is expected to be beautiful but not intimidating. Successful but not threatening. Confident but not arrogant. Vulnerable but not emotional. Strong but never angry. The target seems to move depending on the viewer, but the expectation remains remarkably consistent.

Part of the problem is that Ciara suffers from what I can only describe as the “effortlessly intimidating woman” phenomenon. She is beautiful, accomplished, composed and seemingly self-contained, which leads many people to assume she is somehow immune to the vulnerabilities that plague everyone else. Audiences often confuse poise with invincibility. They see a woman who looks like she has it all together and forget she is still a woman navigating rejection, disappointment and heartbreak in front of millions of people.

It is a pattern I explored previously in The Problem Isn’t Ciara’s Reaction. What struck me then, and continues to strike me now, is how often conversations surrounding Ciara become centred on her response rather than the behaviour that provoked it. Time and again, the discussion shifts away from what happened and towards whether Ciara reacted correctly, calmly enough, graciously enough or attractively enough. The focus moves from the wound to the person bleeding.

Reality television has a habit of revealing cultural expectations we would rather pretend no longer exist. Black women, in particular, are often expected to absorb disappointment gracefully, communicate pain perfectly and remain endlessly composed regardless of what is happening around them. Their hurt must be understandable but not inconvenient. Their anger must be justified but not unsettling. Their vulnerability must be visible but never messy.

What audiences were often reacting to in Ciara was not simply Ciara herself, but the discomfort of watching a Black woman refuse to make herself smaller for other people’s comfort. She was not willing to laugh things off, play the cool girl or pretend situations hurt less than they did. That refusal is often interpreted as an attitude when, in reality, it is self-respect.

Perhaps the most revealing question is not whether Ciara’s reactions were always perfect. Few people’s are. The more interesting question is why perfection is so often demanded of her in the first place. Male white cast members are frequently granted complexity. They are allowed to be contradictory, flawed, confused, evolving and occasionally selfish. Ciara, by contrast, is often expected to be a role model, a therapist, a beauty queen and a saint simultaneously. Anything less can quickly become evidence against her.

That is why the conversation surrounding Ciara ultimately extends far beyond one relationship or one season of reality television. It speaks to a much larger question about who gets afforded softness, who gets afforded complexity and who is expected to carry their pain elegantly enough to make everyone else comfortable.

That is why Mia’s presence felt so significant.

One of the most quietly powerful moments of the season was watching another Black woman refuse to allow Ciara’s accomplishments to disappear into the background. On a show where conversations often revolve around who is dating whom, who hurt whom and who owes whom an apology, Mia repeatedly brought the focus back to who Ciara actually is.

Not the storyline. Not the love interest. Not the woman reacting.

The woman herself.

Because somewhere between the endless debates about relationships and reality television drama, it becomes easy to forget that Ciara is a nurse, a model, a homeowner and a woman who has built a remarkable life for herself. Mia’s support was not simply a friendship gesture. It was a refusal to let the audience lose sight of the full picture.

As one viewer observed, there is something profoundly moving about watching a woman only a handful of generations removed from enslavement build wealth, ownership, visibility and opportunity in spaces that were never designed with her in mind. That perspective does not place Ciara beyond criticism. What it does provide is context.

And context matters.

One of the most common ways society diminishes women is by reducing them to the worst thing that happened to them. One of the most common ways society diminishes Black women is by reducing them to the moment they reacted to it.

What Mia understood was that before Ciara was a storyline, she was a success story.

Sometimes, the most radical thing one woman can do for another is remind the room who she is when everyone else has become distracted by who they want her to be.

If Ciara’s story exposed the narrow emotional range often afforded to Black women, KJ’s reunion revelations exposed something equally uncomfortable about Black men.

One of the most revealing moments of the reunion came when KJ spoke openly about being sectioned following self-harm, receiving a bipolar diagnosis and navigating a level of emotional pain viewers had not fully understood throughout the season. He also explained that parts of the Amanda and West situation had triggered unresolved wounds connected to his father’s infidelity. It was a raw, vulnerable and deeply human moment.

Yet what fascinated me was not what KJ shared. It was how some people responded to it. Almost immediately, sections of the audience seemed irritated by his sadness. Social media was filled with comments suggesting he was making the reunion about himself, dwelling on the past or seeking sympathy. The reaction felt strangely revealing because KJ was not attempting to excuse harmful behaviour or avoid accountability. He was offering context. He was explaining a wound.

Somewhere along the way, we seem to have developed a habit of confusing explanation with excuse. The distinction matters.

Mental illness, trauma and grief do not exist solely to explain away bad behaviour. Sometimes they simply explain behaviour. Sometimes they explain why someone is sad, why they are triggered, why they are struggling or why they are still carrying something long after everyone else has moved on.

What struck me most was how little space seemed to exist for KJ to be complicated. There appeared to be an unspoken expectation that he should either be resilient or broken, strong or vulnerable, sympathetic or frustrating. Yet human beings are rarely that tidy. Most of us are several contradictory things at once.

That question feels particularly relevant when discussing Black cast members. Throughout this season, Ciara, KJ and Mia found themselves navigating different versions of the same challenge: the pressure to package their humanity in ways that feel comfortable for other people. Ciara was often expected to make her hurt smaller. KJ was often expected to make his pain easier to digest. Mia, meanwhile, found herself doing something Black women are frequently required to do in professional and social spaces alike: reminding people of accomplishments that should never have needed reminding in the first place.

The irony is that modern culture constantly tells people to be vulnerable. We celebrate therapy. We encourage openness. We share infographics about mental health. We tell men to talk about their feelings. What we rarely discuss is that vulnerability becomes significantly less appealing once it stops being inspirational.

People are comfortable with healing. They are less comfortable with witnessing someone who is still healing.

KJ’s story was messy, emotional, unresolved and occasionally uncomfortable. In other words, it looked remarkably similar to real life.

Perhaps that is what made the audience reaction so interesting. It raised a question that extends far beyond reality television. Who gets afforded complexity? Who gets to be both hurting and imperfect? Who gets grace while they are still figuring things out?

Because one of the recurring themes of this season was that some people are allowed to be human, while others are expected to be examples.

And there is a difference between the two.

The reunion also quietly revealed a cultural shift that would have been far less common on reality television twenty years ago: multiple men crying openly on stage.

Jesse, Carl, KJ and Kyle each showed different versions of vulnerability, discussing fear, regret, therapy, mental health and emotional overwhelm without immediately framing those emotions as weakness. For decades, popular culture rewarded men for being detached, emotionally contained and difficult to read. This reunion looked noticeably different.

But the reaction also exposed an uncomfortable double standard. White men are often granted more room to be emotional, messy and publicly vulnerable, while Black men are more likely to have their pain questioned, scrutinised or treated as excessive.

That is why the reunion felt significant. The issue was not simply that men cried. It was the audience response that revealed which kinds of male vulnerability we still find acceptable and which kinds we are less comfortable sitting with.

If West represented the fantasy and KJ represented the wound, Carl represented something else entirely: the after.

Reality television is obsessed with beginnings and endings. The first date. The engagement. The betrayal. The breakup. The explosive reunion. What it rarely shows is what happens once the credits should have rolled. How do two people move forward after publicly hurting one another? How do they exist in the same room after disappointment, resentment and heartbreak? How do they stop being a couple without becoming enemies?

That is what made Carl and Lindsay unexpectedly compelling this season.

In a culture increasingly addicted to scorched-earth endings, there was something almost radical about watching two people attempt to build respect where love had failed. Neither pretended the past had not happened. Neither suddenly became perfect. Yet there was a visible effort to move away from punishment and towards peace.

What struck me most was how unglamorous that process looked. Popular culture loves transformation stories because they are clean. We love the breakthrough moment. The dramatic comeback. The perfectly packaged redemption arc. Real healing is usually far less cinematic. It is repetitive, frustrating and often deeply ordinary. It happens through boundaries, difficult conversations, therapy appointments and small decisions made over and over again.

That is why Carl’s journey has become so interesting. Sobriety is often discussed as though it is a finish line, when in reality it is an ongoing reorganisation of self. Watching him navigate life after addiction, after heartbreak and after the devastating loss of his brother has been a reminder that recovery is not about returning to who you were before. It is about becoming someone new.

Perhaps the most moving part of Carl’s story this season was not what he was leaving behind, but what he was building. Watching him open Soft Bar felt significant because it represented something larger than a business venture. It was a physical manifestation of a life he could not have built in an earlier chapter of his story. A space rooted in connection rather than escape. Community rather than self-destruction. Presence rather than avoidance.

We often talk about healing as though it means getting over something. Carl’s story suggests something different. The goal is not to erase what happened. The goal is to build a life large enough that what happened is no longer the only thing defining you.

Perhaps that is why Carl and Lindsay felt so compelling this season. For all the conversations about breakups and failed engagements, what we were really watching was two people trying to figure out who they wanted to be after the story they thought they were living came to an end.

Lindsay’s version of healing looked very different.

For years, Lindsay Hubbard has existed at the centre of the storm. She has been the woman arguing, ending the relationship, demanding the conversation or forcing the issue everyone else wanted to avoid. Entire seasons of Summer House have revolved around Lindsay’s emotional life, often reducing her to a collection of reactions while overlooking the experiences that produced them.

This season felt different. For perhaps the first time, Lindsay was not the story. She was watching it unfold.

Part of that shift undoubtedly came from motherhood. Watching her navigate life as a new mother while simultaneously rebuilding her identity after one of the most public breakups in Bravo history felt surprisingly moving. There was a softness to her this season that did not feel performative or forced. It felt earned. Not because motherhood magically transforms women into better people, but because certain experiences force a reckoning with what matters and what no longer deserves your energy.

What made Lindsay particularly interesting was the way she seemed to move from protagonist to observer. Throughout the season, she often occupied the role of sounding board, mediator and truth-teller. During the explosive Carl and Kyle confrontation, she was one of the few people capable of seeing beyond the immediate emotion and recognising the deeper hurt sitting underneath it. Rather than escalating conflict, she repeatedly appeared to be searching for understanding.

There is something quietly powerful about watching someone who has spent years being misunderstood become the person trying to understand everyone else.

Perhaps that is why her reunion observations about West landed so strongly. When Lindsay accused him of treating women as though they were disposable, it did not feel like a dramatic reality television moment. It felt like pattern recognition. It felt like the perspective of a woman who had lived long enough, dated enough and been disappointed enough to recognise a familiar script when she saw one.

The irony is that Lindsay’s greatest growth this season was not becoming less emotional. It was becoming more discerning. She no longer seemed interested in winning every battle or proving every point. Instead, she appeared increasingly interested in understanding the people around her and protecting the life she had built beyond the show.

Given what viewers know about Lindsay’s complicated relationship with her own mother, there was something particularly poignant about watching her step into motherhood herself. For years, much of Lindsay’s story has been shaped by abandonment, rejection and the search for emotional security. This season offered a glimpse of something different: a woman creating the stability she once spent years looking for.

If Carl’s story was about rebuilding a life after loss, Lindsay’s was about discovering that healing does not always arrive as closure. Sometimes it arrives as perspective.

Friendship may have been the most quietly important story of the entire season.

One of the lessons of your thirties is realising that there is a difference between friends who are fun and friends who are safe. In your twenties, you are often drawn to the people who make life exciting. In your thirties, you start looking for the people who make life feel softer.

The most meaningful relationships this season were not necessarily the loudest ones. They appeared in small moments. Bailey instinctively covering her rosé glass when Carl mentioned that the smell of alcohol could be triggering. Levi consistently showing up for Bailey. Mia making sure Ciara was seen as a whole person rather than simply a storyline.

None of these moments were dramatic. That is precisely why they mattered.

By your thirties, friendship stops being about who surrounds you and starts being about who steadies you. The people who change your life are rarely the ones making speeches about loyalty. They are the ones quietly paying attention. The ones who remember what hurts. The ones who celebrate your wins without competing with them. The ones who make room for your vulnerability without treating it like a weakness.

Perhaps that is the real difference between being liked and being loved. One fills a room. The other makes it feel safe enough to stay.

If West represented a type of man many women eventually encounter, Amanda represented a type of woman many women eventually learn to fear.

Not the obvious mean girl. The obvious mean girls are easy. They announce themselves.

The more dangerous version understands that power works best when it remains invisible.

By their thirties, most women have met her. The woman who never quite says enough to be confronted directly. The woman who understands that a raised eyebrow can do more damage than an insult and that a carefully placed comment can travel much further than an argument. She rarely appears to be at the centre of conflict, yet somehow conflict seems to gather around her.

What makes this archetype so difficult to explain is that she rarely leaves evidence behind. The influence is real, but the fingerprints are missing.

Watching Amanda this season, I found myself thinking about a particular type of female social currency: validation.

Not love. Not friendship. Validation.

The need to be chosen. Preferred. Prioritised.

The need to remain relevant in the emotional economy of the room.

The attention is the prize. The validation is the currency.

Once you recognise that dynamic, certain behaviours begin to look different. You start noticing who seems unsettled when another woman becomes the focal point. Who appears most comfortable aligning herself with male approval. Who consistently remains adjacent to drama while avoiding responsibility for its outcome.

Part of the reason Amanda generates such strong reactions from some viewers is that many believe they have noticed a pattern. Across multiple seasons, tensions have repeatedly emerged with women of colour such as Jules, Danielle, Gabby and, more recently, Ciara. Whether those incidents are connected or entirely unrelated is ultimately for viewers to decide. But people are rarely reacting to a single moment. They are reacting to repetition.

And repetition changes how we interpret behaviour.

One of the more interesting lessons adulthood teaches is that influence and responsibility do not always occupy the same space. Some people throw the punch. Others simply create the conditions for it. Some people become known for their reactions. Others become skilled at provoking them while remaining above the fray.

The latter is usually harder to spot.

After all, history tends to remember the person who fired the cannon.

Not always the person who quietly supplied the ammunition.

The most destabilising friendships are rarely the loudest ones. They are the ones that leave you questioning yourself. The ones where every individual incident seems insignificant, but the overall pattern feels impossible to ignore.

By your thirties, you begin to understand that discomfort is data.

You do not need a confession.

You do not need a smoking gun.

Sometimes the pattern is the proof.

Kyle’s story highlighted another uncomfortable truth about adulthood: we are often suspicious of the person reacting and remarkably forgiving of the person provoking.

One of the easiest mistakes to make in any conflict is assuming that the loudest person is automatically the problem. The person crying, shouting, exploding or losing their composure becomes the focal point because their behaviour is visible. The frustration is obvious. The reaction is undeniable.

The slow accumulation that led there is usually much harder to see.

Reality television is particularly good at capturing explosions and much less effective at capturing erosion. It can show you the argument. It cannot always show you the hundred small moments that came before it. The dismissals. The digs. The withdrawals. The feeling of speaking and not being heard. The quiet ways resentment accumulates over time.

That is what made Kyle so interesting this season. For years, Kyle has often been cast as the emotionally reactive one. The loud one. The dramatic one. The one viewers are encouraged to roll their eyes at. Yet this season repeatedly raised a more complicated question: what happens when the person losing their temper is not reacting to a single incident, but to a pattern?

This is not an argument that Kyle is always right. He isn’t. Nor is it an argument that Amanda is always wrong. It is an argument against simplicity.

Because one of the most valuable lessons adulthood teaches is that emotional damage is not always delivered loudly. Sometimes it arrives through distance. Through indifference. Through subtle undermining. Through making someone feel perpetually unseen.

We tend to notice the match.

We pay far less attention to the person holding the lighter.

Perhaps that is why Kyle’s story resonated with so many viewers. Beneath the arguments and frustration was a reminder that relationships are rarely defined by a single moment. They are defined by patterns.

And sometimes the person who looks the most unreasonable is simply the person who finally ran out of ways to be reasonable.

One of the more striking visuals of the reunion was not who was speaking, but who appeared to have mentally left the room.

At various points, Amanda and West seemed disengaged from conversations about accountability, hurt and impact. Whether that was discomfort, avoidance, exhaustion or self-protection is impossible to know.

But it was noticeable.

In a reunion filled with people naming wounds, discussing triggers and attempting to explain themselves, disengagement became its own form of communication.

Some people want resolution. Some people want understanding. Some people simply want the discomfort to end.

What people refuse to engage with can sometimes tell you their true character as much as what they choose to say.

Perhaps that is why Summer House has become more interesting as its cast has aged.

The original premise was escapism. Young professionals fleeing New York for weekends of excess, freedom and bad decisions. But somewhere along the way, the show quietly evolved into something else. The party is still there, but the party is no longer enough.

The hidden brilliance of Summer House is that it is no longer really about summer.

It is about the end of summer.

It is about the moment people realise that the version of themselves that once felt glamorous, chaotic or free may no longer be sustainable. The moment when the hangover lasts longer than the party. The moment when avoiding your problems becomes harder than facing them.

Because the strongest thread running through this season was not romance, friendship or even conflict. It was the simple reality that you can leave the city, but you cannot leave yourself.

Wherever you go, you bring your history with you. The childhood wound. The failed engagement. The addiction. The diagnosis. The betrayal. The fear of being unwanted. The fear of being unseen.

The house became less a summer share and more a pressure cooker for everything left unresolved.

Perhaps that is why the season resonated so deeply. Not because everyone behaved perfectly—they didn’t. Not because every storyline reached a satisfying conclusion—they rarely do. But because it captured adulthood at the exact point where the consequences become real.

These are no longer twenty-somethings mistaking chaos for a personality trait. They are people navigating grief, recovery, parenthood, heartbreak, friendship and identity in real time. The stakes are no longer simply social embarrassment or romantic disappointment.

The stakes are who you become because of what happened to you.

Reality television works because it allows us to judge other people from a distance. The best reality television eventually removes that distance. We start by asking why they are like that and end by wondering where we are like that too.

Where have we mistaken charm for character?

Where have we demanded perfection from people we never expected to be human?

Where have we confused explanation with excuse?

Where have we stayed in friendships that made us feel small because the harm was difficult to name?

Where have we applauded vulnerability in theory and struggled with it in practice?

That is why this season deserves more than a recap.

West revealed how badly we want to believe in the emotionally evolved man. Ciara revealed how often Black women are expected to make pain elegant before it is believed. KJ revealed how conditional our compassion for male vulnerability can still be. Carl and Lindsay showed that healing is not always reconciliation, but sometimes simply learning how to move forward. Bailey, Levi and Mia reminded us that the most important relationships in adulthood are often the quietest ones. Amanda and Kyle showed how easily we confuse the loudest reaction with the original wound.

In the end, Summer House was never really about the Hamptons.

The Hamptons were simply the setting.

The real subject was adulthood. Messy, unfinished, contradictory adulthood.

The kind that asks the same questions over and over again.

Who gets grace? Who gets believed? Who gets forgiven? Who gets to be complicated? Who gets to grow?

The answer, as ever, depends on who is watching.

There is a scene in almost every romantic comedy from the 1990s and early 2000s that feels strangely foreign now. The characters aren’t at home. They aren’t at work. They aren’t on a dating app. They aren’t creating content. They’re simply existing somewhere together.

The women of Sex and the City spend half their lives in diners, bars, cafés and restaurants, wandering New York in search of conversation. The gang in Friends practically lives in Central Perk. The characters in Gilmore Girls drift between Luke’s Diner, the town square and community events. Even the teenagers in One Tree Hill and The O.C. seem permanently gathered in public spaces, accidentally running into one another, forming friendships, starting relationships and creating the kinds of stories that become memories.

Watching those shows now feels oddly nostalgic, even when the fashion is questionable and everyone appears to have an impossible amount of free time.

The nostalgia isn’t really for the clothes or the music.

It’s for the world.

Because somewhere along the way, many of the places that allowed people to simply exist together began disappearing.

Sociologists call these spaces “third places.” Home is the first place. Work is the second. Third places are everything in between. They are the cafés where people linger for hours, the local pubs where everyone knows one another, the libraries, community centres, sports clubs, churches, parks, bookshops and town squares where social life happens organically. They are the spaces that transform strangers into acquaintances and acquaintances into friends.

Most importantly, they are places where connection occurs without being the explicit purpose.

Nobody walks into a neighbourhood café thinking, “Today I will meet my future best friend.” Nobody joins a local running club expecting to meet their spouse. Nobody attends a community event because they have scheduled human connection into their Google Calendar.

Life simply happens around them.

Or at least it used to.

One of the defining features of modern adulthood is the growing sense that every interaction must now be engineered. Friendship has become something people actively search for rather than accidentally discover. Dating has become an app. Networking has become an industry. Community has become a subscription service.

If you want to meet people, you’re often encouraged to attend a ticketed event, join a paid membership group, purchase a course, download an app or enrol in some kind of organised activity. Increasingly, the message seems to be that human connection is available, provided you’re willing to pay for it.

Perhaps that helps explain why so many people feel lonely despite being surrounded by opportunities to communicate.

For all our talk about being more connected than ever, many of us seem to spend enormous amounts of time alone. We work remotely. We order food online. We stream entertainment at home. We shop online. We text instead of calling. We watch creators instead of seeing friends. We consume endless content about life while participating in less of it ourselves.

The result is a strange paradox. We know more about other people’s lives than previous generations ever did, yet many of us feel profoundly disconnected from the people around us.

This isn’t simply a personal failure or an individual weakness. It is partly the result of a society that has gradually dismantled many of the environments where relationships naturally form.

The economic forces behind this are difficult to ignore. Cities have become more expensive. Commercial rents have increased. Independent cafés, bookshops and community spaces struggle to survive. Public spaces are increasingly privatised. Spending time somewhere without spending money often feels vaguely suspicious. Even a simple coffee can now cost enough to make lingering for hours feel indulgent.

At the same time, technology companies have become extraordinarily successful at convincing us that digital substitutes can replace physical community.

Why go out when you can scroll?

Why attend an event when you can watch a podcast?

Why build a friendship circle when you can follow hundreds of people discussing friendship online?

The irony is that much of the internet now exists to solve problems the internet itself helped create.

Loneliness has become an entire economy. There are apps to make friends, apps to find dates, apps to find communities, apps to discuss your mental health, apps to discuss your loneliness and apps to discuss your relationship with the apps you downloaded to solve your loneliness. Entire industries have emerged around helping people find the connections that previous generations often stumbled into by accident.

None of this is to romanticise the past. Earlier eras had their own exclusions, inequalities and limitations. Not everybody found belonging in their local community. Not every neighbourhood was welcoming. Not every town square was idyllic.

But there is a difference between recognising the flaws of the past and pretending nothing valuable was lost.

Something was lost.

A culture built around participation has increasingly become a culture built around consumption.

We consume entertainment instead of creating it. We consume opinions instead of debating them. We consume content about friendship, dating and community instead of experiencing those things directly. We observe more than we participate.

Perhaps that is why so many people feel an almost irrational longing for periods they never actually lived through. The current obsession with the 1990s and early 2000s is often dismissed as simple nostalgia, but I suspect it reflects something deeper. People are not yearning for dial-up internet or low-rise jeans. They are yearning for a version of society that felt more communal, less algorithmic and less optimised.

They are yearning for a world where not every moment had to be monetised.

A world where boredom existed.

A world where chance encounters happened.

A world where people belonged somewhere.

When politicians, journalists and commentators discuss loneliness, they often frame it as an emotional problem. In reality, loneliness is increasingly becoming a structural one. It is not simply that people have forgotten how to socialise. It is that many of the spaces designed for socialisation have vanished. We cannot continue removing the environments that produce community and then act surprised when community disappears.

The question, then, is not whether we are lonely.

The question is what kind of society we are building.

A society where every interaction is transactional, every hobby is monetised, every gathering is branded and every spare moment is spent consuming content will inevitably produce isolation. Human beings evolved in communities, not algorithms. We evolved through shared rituals, repeated encounters and physical proximity. We evolved sitting around tables, not staring into personalised feeds.

The real challenge of the coming decade may not be technological at all.

It may be remembering how to find one another again.

And perhaps that starts with recognising that the things we miss most are not necessarily the things we think we miss. Maybe we don’t miss being younger. Maybe we don’t miss the television shows, the music or even the era itself.

When millennials first watched The Devil Wears Prada, many of us thought it was a film about ambition.

Now, almost twenty years later, rewatching it feels slightly like watching a workplace psychological thriller in designer heels.

Back then, the fantasy of the film felt obvious: be exceptional, work harder than everyone else, suffer beautifully, become untouchable.

Miranda Priestly was terrifying, yes, but she was also aspirational. The exhaustion was part of the glamour. The emotional suppression was part of the sophistication. The complete erosion of personal boundaries was framed as the unavoidable cost of greatness.

And honestly? A lot of us absorbed that worldview completely.

Because the mid-2000s were the absolute peak of hustle culture before we even had language for it yet.

The girlboss era had not fully arrived, but its foundations were already everywhere: women proving themselves through overwork, burnout disguised as ambition, being permanently reachable, looking chic while emotionally deteriorating.

Andy’s transformation in the original film is technically framed as becoming more polished and successful, but rewatching it now, it mostly looks like a woman developing stress-induced dissociation in very expensive coats.

The older I get, the more fascinated I am by how differently millennials interpret films now compared to when we first consumed them.

Especially films about work, womanhood…. films that taught us suffering was sophistication.

Because now we live in a culture obsessed with therapy language, nervous systems, boundaries, burnout, emotional intelligence, rest, healing, work-life balance, and protecting your peace. Sometimes excessively so. But still - the cultural shift is undeniable.

Which is why the timing of a Devil Wears Prada sequel feels so interesting.

Not because we desperately needed one.
But because it accidentally becomes a perfect mirror for what happened to millennials themselves.

The people who watched the original film at sixteen are now in their thirties and forties. We are no longer watching ambition from a distance. We have lived inside it.

We know what burnout feels like now.

We know what it feels like to answer emails while sick. To feel guilty for resting. To tie our self-worth to productivity. To confuse emotional numbness with professionalism.

And I think that is why modern audiences no longer romanticise characters like Miranda in quite the same way.

Not because ambition became uncool.

But because being psychologically unwell stopped feeling aspirational.

That is the real cultural shift of the last decade.

The original Devil Wears Prada came from an era where emotional detachment was considered power. The modern world increasingly values self-awareness instead. Sometimes to an exhausting degree, admittedly, but still - the hierarchy changed.

Even fashion changed alongside it.

The hyper-visible status obsession of the 2000s gave way to “quiet luxury,” wellness aesthetics, softness, minimalism, Pilates uniforms masquerading as identities, skin care routines treated like spiritual practice, and an entire generation trying to recover from adrenal fatigue while carrying £200 oat milk handbags.

The fantasy is no longer:
“She works constantly.”

The fantasy now is:
“She has boundaries.”

That would have sounded absurd in 2006.

And maybe that is why the sequel feels emotionally resonant before it has even fully arrived. Because whether intentionally or not, it lands at a moment where millennials are reassessing almost every value system we inherited.

Work.
Success.
Beauty.
Relationships.
Productivity.
Womanhood.
Power.

A lot of us grew up believing adulthood meant becoming harder.

Now everyone is in therapy trying to figure out how to soften again.

The older I get, the more I think the defining millennial experience is realising that many of the things we once considered aspirational were actually just socially rewarded forms of self-abandonment.

And to be fair to films like The Devil Wears Prada, they did not create that culture. They reflected it.

That was the world.

A world where being busy made you important.
Where exhaustion signalled relevance.
Where overworking yourself was framed as proof you deserved to be there.

Millennials did not invent burnout culture.
We inherited it.
Then accidentally perfected it.

And now we are the generation trying to recover from it in real time.

Not because we “don’t want to work anymore.”

But because eventually an entire generation looked around and realised being permanently emotionally depleted was maybe not the glamorous adulthood we had been promised after all.

The result is a culture where emotional investment is treated almost like a strategic mistake.

Care too quickly and you risk looking naive.
Ask for clarity too soon and you’re considered intense.
Express genuine interest and suddenly the power dynamic shifts.

So people learn to perform indifference.

They wait longer to text back.
They pretend not to care about exclusivity.
They speak about relationships with ironic distance.

But beneath the performance, the original desire remains unchanged.

Most people still want the same thing they always did.

Consistency.
Affection.
A person who chooses them deliberately.

Women were encouraged to build careers, autonomy, financial stability.

All positive changes.

But something else happened alongside that progress.

Romantic dependence quietly became unfashionable.

Needing someone — emotionally — began to be framed as weakness.

So people learned to want love quietly.

To downplay it.
To pretend they were indifferent.

Which creates a strange situation where everyone is privately hoping for connection…

There is a particular kind of loneliness that seems to arrive somewhere in your early thirties.

Not the loneliness of adolescence, when you feel misunderstood.
Not the loneliness of a breakup, when a specific person is missing.

This one is harder to name.

It tends to appear on quiet weekends. On evenings when the group chats are silent and the city feels strangely distant. It appears when you scroll through photos of engagement parties, house purchases, baby showers, holidays with couples whose lives seem to be unfolding in synchronised motion.

And the thought that creeps in is not simply I feel lonely.

Community existed around you.

Modern adulthood quietly dismantled much of that infrastructure.

The rise of remote work further loosened the social fabric that offices once provided. Where earlier workplaces functioned not only as professional environments but also as social ecosystems, many people now complete entire workdays without interacting with another human being in person.

Urban life often means living next to people whose names you never learn, moving buildings every few years, and navigating cities where physical proximity does not necessarily translate into community.

The traditional markers that once structured adult life - marriage, family networks, long-term jobs - have also changed dramatically.

Many of these shifts reflect progress. Greater independence, mobility, and choice have expanded possibilities for how people live their lives.

But they have also produced an unintended consequence.

Friendship is no longer structurally supported in the same way it once was.

It has become something that must be actively built, maintained, and defended against the competing demands of modern schedules.

And that requires resources.

Time.
Energy.
Money.
Geographic luck.
Aligned life stages.

Without those conditions, connection becomes fragile.

Social media complicates this reality in ways that make loneliness feel even more personal.

Digital platforms offer constant glimpses into other people’s lives - birthday dinners, weddings, group holidays, celebratory brunches, carefully curated moments of togetherness.

But social media is, by design, a highlight reel of social life.

What it rarely shows is the logistical effort behind adult friendships: the cancelled plans, the distance between cities, the emotional labour of organising gatherings, the months that pass without seeing people you care about simply because life has become so complicated to coordinate.

When those quieter realities remain invisible, loneliness begins to feel like a personal anomaly rather than a shared experience.

Unlike school or university - environments where proximity and shared routines naturally generate relationships - adulthood rarely provides consistent social ecosystems.

People work irregular hours. They move cities. They form families. Their schedules diverge.

Sometimes that works beautifully.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

And when it doesn’t, the silence around the experience can make it feel uniquely personal.

Perhaps the real challenge of modern adulthood is learning to understand loneliness differently.

I. The Collapse of Distance

Previous generations encountered conflict through newspapers, evening broadcasts, or delayed reporting. There was time - however imperfect - between event and exposure. War happened somewhere else. You learned about it later.

Now there is no “later.”

There are live videos. Real-time commentary. Amateur analysis. Graphic footage. Maps. Reposts. Threads. Correctives to the threads. Correctives to the correctives.

Distance has collapsed.

But agency has not increased to match it.

We see more. We control nothing.

And that imbalance is psychologically destabilising.

You can watch a missile hit a building thousands of miles away. You can read arguments about geopolitics from strangers in your comments. You can feel rage, sorrow, fear, solidarity - and still be sitting at your kitchen table.

II. The Moral Obligation to Care About Everything

There is also a new, quieter pressure.

To be informed is no longer enough.

You must be vocal.

Aligned.

Correct.

You must share the right post.

Use the right language.

Avoid the wrong phrasing.

Signal your moral position clearly.

Silence is interpreted as complicity.

Nuance is interpreted as weakness.

And while there are moments that demand clarity - moments where cruelty is so obvious that moral ambiguity feels obscene - living inside a constant demand for reaction is not sustainable.

The human nervous system was not built to process global suffering at algorithmic speed.

We are exposed to:

• footage of migration crackdowns

• political extremism rising across Europe

• violent rhetoric normalised

• protest movements

• counter-movements

• climate collapse

• economic instability

All before lunch.

It is not apathy that makes people feel numb.

It is saturation.

III. Watching War Through a Screen

There is something uniquely disorienting about witnessing devastation through the same device that delivers memes.

You can see children pulled from rubble and, seconds later, an advertisement for summer dresses.

The medium flattens everything.

Tragedy becomes scrollable.

Horror becomes content-shaped.

Outrage becomes a format.

And because platforms reward engagement, the most emotionally activating footage rises fastest. Not always the most contextualised. Not always the most responsible. Just the most arresting.

This doesn’t mean the suffering is unreal.

It means the delivery system alters how we metabolise it.

We are watching war the way we once watched reality television - episodically, reactively, publicly.

And that does something to empathy.

When exposure is constant, empathy becomes strained. Not because people care less, but because the body cannot remain in crisis indefinitely.

IV. The Guilt of Logging Off

There is another layer to this.

The guilt.

If you turn off the news, are you abandoning people?

If you don’t repost, are you insufficiently outraged?

If you take a break from reading, are you selfish?

We have collapsed care into constant visibility.

But witnessing is not the same as helping.

Posting is not the same as policy.

And being perpetually overwhelmed does not increase your capacity to act meaningfully.

Yet many of us stay online anyway.

Because to look away feels immoral.

Because to rest feels indulgent.

Because the world feels like it is tilting, and paying attention is the only proof that we are not indifferent.

V. When Everything Is Urgent

The problem is not that people are paying attention.

The problem is that everything now feels equally urgent.

Escalation between Iran and Israel.

Political rhetoric intensifying in the United States.

Authoritarian language normalised in Europe.

Footage of raids, arrests, crackdowns.

Each event demands emotional response.

But urgency without hierarchy becomes noise.

And noise erodes clarity.

When every moment is framed as historic, history begins to feel unlivable.

We are carrying geopolitical anxiety in our nervous systems while trying to maintain jobs, friendships, relationships, rent payments.

We are absorbing the world’s violence through glass screens and then expected to show up to dinner emotionally intact.

It is too much.

VI. The Second Draft of Awareness

So what does a second draft look like here?

Not indifference.

Not disengagement.

Not pretending things are fine.

But perhaps something more measured.

Caring without collapsing.

Staying informed without self-destruction.

Understanding that your humanity is not measured by how much pain you can absorb in a single day.

There are moments when moral clarity is necessary.

There are times when silence is not neutrality.

But there is also a difference between sustained awareness and perpetual crisis mode.

Empathy is not meant to function as an infinite resource.

It requires protection to remain effective.

Maybe the second draft of living in a globally connected world is not about knowing everything at once.

Maybe it is about learning how to hold the world’s suffering without losing your ability to live inside your own life.

Because history is not slowing down.

And if we do not learn how to metabolise it differently, we will confuse burnout for compassion.

I wonder if the most radical thing we can do right now isn’t to know more - but to care in a way that doesn’t destroy us.

Meeting someone used to involve curiosity.

You learned who they were gradually - through conversation, conflict, shared time, small revelations that accumulated into understanding.

Today, much of that discovery happens before interaction even begins.

We arrive already informed. We know someone’s politics, tastes, relationship history, emotional vocabulary, and preferred self-description long before we know how they actually move through the world.

Identity now comes pre-summarised.

People describe themselves using language that feels almost professional: attachment styles, healing eras, personality archetypes, carefully defined values. None of this is inherently false. In many ways, it reflects genuine self-reflection.

But something subtle has shifted.

We are no longer only understanding ourselves.

We are making ourselves legible.

II. The Algorithm Rewards Clarity

Modern platforms function best when people are easily understood.

Ambiguity performs poorly. Consistency performs well.

The clearer someone’s identity appears, the easier they are to categorise, follow, and trust. Over time, this creates an unspoken pressure to stabilise personality into something recognisable.

You become the ambitious one.

The emotionally intelligent one.

The chaotic one.

The healed one.

Not necessarily because these identities are untrue - but because repetition makes them coherent.

And coherence is rewarded.

The difficulty is that real people are rarely coherent for long.

Human beings evolve unevenly. We contradict ourselves. We grow out of beliefs that once felt permanent. Yet when identity becomes publicly established, change can begin to feel like inconsistency rather than development.

III. Personality as Performance

None of this is entirely intentional.

Most people are not consciously performing. They are responding to an environment that encourages explanation.

We explain ourselves to avoid misunderstanding.

We define ourselves to prevent misinterpretation.

We narrate our behaviour so others know how to read us correctly.

Over time, however, explanation becomes habit.

Instead of allowing experience to speak first, identity arrives pre-interpreted. The language of self-awareness sometimes replaces the uncertainty that makes connection possible.

And paradoxically, the more clearly we define ourselves, the less room there is for surprise.

IV. Dating the Person - or the Narrative

This shift becomes particularly visible in modern dating.

Increasingly, people are not encountering each other as unknowns. They are encountering versions already contextualised by online presence and self-definition.

You are not simply meeting someone.

You are meeting their stated values, emotional framework, political positioning, humour style, and curated sense of self - often all at once.

Compatibility becomes analytical before it becomes emotional.

Chemistry struggles to develop when everything arrives explained in advance. Attraction historically relied on gradual recognition - the slow realisation that someone reveals different dimensions over time.

When identity is fully articulated upfront, discovery has less space to exist.

V. The Exhaustion Beneath Consistency

Maintaining a stable identity publicly requires effort.

Once people understand you in a particular way, deviation can feel risky. Changing interests, opinions, or priorities may invite scrutiny rather than curiosity.

Consistency becomes mistaken for authenticity.

Yet authenticity has never meant permanence. It has always meant alignment with who you are now, not who you were required to be yesterday.

The quiet exhaustion many people feel may come from sustaining identities that once fit but no longer fully do.

We are allowed to evolve privately.

But culturally, evolution now happens under observation.

VI. The Second Draft Self

Perhaps maturity today requires something counterintuitive.

Not clearer branding.

Not stronger signalling.

Not more explanation.

But tolerance for ambiguity.

Allowing people to misunderstand you slightly.

Allowing identity to remain unfinished.

Allowing change without announcement.

The most grounded individuals often reveal themselves slowly - not because they are hiding, but because they trust experience to communicate what words cannot.

And maybe the second draft of adulthood is not about perfect self-definition at all.

Now it makes people suspicious.

If someone doesn’t post their partner, we assume something’s wrong.

I. The Collapse of Mystery

Once upon a time, you met someone and discovered them slowly.

Now you Google them before dessert.

We know:

• who someone dated

• where they holiday

• their political alignment

• their childhood dog

• their ex’s new girlfriend or boyfriend

• what they ate last Thursday
  

There is no unfolding. There is pre-reading.

And it isn’t really anyone’s fault.
This isn’t an accusation - it’s adaptation.
This is simply how social life functions now.
I catch myself doing it too: over-explaining, searching, trying to understand people before allowing myself to simply experience them.

And pre-reading changes chemistry.

Mystery used to be erotic because it allowed projection.
Now, projection is replaced by data.

We don’t wonder anymore.
We research.

And then we pretend the knowing feels organic.

II. Oversharing as Currency

Oversharing used to be vulnerability.
Now it’s strategy.

Crying on TikTok.
Breakup announcements with aesthetic lighting.
“Hard launches” with captions that sound like PR statements.

Intimacy has become content.

There’s a particular rhythm to it lately - the post-reality show podcast circuit, the slow unspooling of every private detail, the almost compulsive need to clarify, explain, correct the narrative in real time. It’s less about drama and more about visibility. Because in this version of public life, silence can feel like erasure. When attention moves this quickly, controlling the story becomes its own form of survival.

The more someone reveals, the more trustworthy they seem. The more transparent, the more “authentic.”

But transparency and authenticity are not the same thing.

Transparency is disclosure.
Authenticity is coherence.

You can disclose everything and still be performing.

In fact, sometimes the performance is stronger because it feels unfiltered.

We have confused access with honesty.

And I’m not outside of this either. I work in marketing - I understand what holds attention, what travels, what sells. I love reality television. I scroll. I watch people narrate their lives in real time the same way everyone else does.

Sharing, in itself, isn’t the problem. Community is built through shared experience, through people recognising themselves in someone else’s story. There is real connection in that.

The tension appears when sharing stops being communication and starts becoming performance - when deeply private moments are staged for collective consumption, like announcing a divorce to millions with the emotional pacing of a public service announcement.

At that point, the internet isn’t witnessing life anymore. It’s directing it.

III. The Soft Launch Era

Soft launching is fascinating because it’s not about privacy.

It’s about controlled exposure.

A hand in the frame.
A blurred shoulder.
A wine glass across from yours.

It says:
“I have something.”
But it also says:
“You don’t get it fully.”

Which proves something important.

We don’t actually want privacy.
We want power over narrative.

Mystery isn’t dead.
It’s curated.

IV. Why Privacy Now Feels Suspicious

When someone refuses to share, people get anxious.

Why aren’t they posting?
Why didn’t they respond?
Why don’t we know?

Because silence disrupts the algorithm.

And we are used to constant signals.

In a world where everyone narrates themselves, someone who doesn’t do this then feels unreadable to the rest of us.

And unreadable feels unsafe.

We’ve been trained to interpret constant updates as stability.

Which means we’ve been trained to see quiet as instability.

V. The Performance of Intimacy

One of the strangest modern phenomena is how comfortable we are watching strangers cry.

We know about:

• their therapy breakthroughs

• their fertility journeys

• their childhood trauma

• their relationship fights
  

And it feels intimate.

But it’s asymmetrical intimacy.

We know them.
They don’t know us.

And yet it satisfies something.

It makes us feel close without being known.

It’s connection without accountability.

Which is easier.
And safer.
And scalable.

Real intimacy cannot scale.

That’s the problem.

You’re not discovering someone.
You’re cross-referencing them.

And because everyone has receipts, we judge before we feel.

Mystery once created longing.
Now it creates paranoia.

And maybe that’s why so many connections collapse early.

Nothing gets to breathe.

VIII. The Second Draft of Intimacy

A second draft of intimacy would look different.

It would mean:

• Not posting everything immediately.

• Letting experiences exist before narrating them.

• Allowing people to discover you slowly.

• Tolerating being slightly misunderstood.

• Protecting something just because it’s yours.
  

Privacy isn’t secrecy.

It’s discernment.

And discernment is power.

The most powerful people in a room are rarely the loudest.

They’re the ones who reveal selectively.

Not because they’re hiding.

Because they understand value.

We don’t actually want privacy.

We want control.

But control isn’t intimacy.

And exposure isn’t connection.

Maybe the next evolution isn’t more transparency.

Maybe it’s restraint.

Maybe the next flex isn’t soft launching.

Bad Bunny is often described as “political,” usually by people who are uncomfortable with the fact that he refuses to translate himself.

He sings in Spanish. He centres Puerto Rico. He names colonial violence, economic exploitation, and cultural erasure without softening the language or offering a glossary. And somehow, despite - or maybe because of - that, he has become one of the most powerful global artists of the decade.

What unsettles people isn’t that Bad Bunny is political.
It’s that Puerto Rico has always been.

There is a persistent fantasy in pop culture that art can exist outside of power. That music, film, and fashion can be “just entertainment” - neutral, universal, unburdened by history. But neutrality is not evenly distributed. It is a privilege afforded to those closest to power, and denied to everyone else.

Puerto Rico is not simply a backdrop for his work. It is not an aesthetic. It is not a vibe. It is a territory shaped by colonialism - one that has been politically subordinated to the United States for over a century, its economy structured around extraction, its people granted citizenship without sovereignty.

Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens who cannot vote for the president who governs them. They have no voting representation in Congress. Their land has been used for military testing, their labour commodified, their debt weaponised, their suffering rendered bureaucratic.

Colonialism didn’t end.
It rebranded.

This is the context Bad Bunny refuses to remove from his work - and that refusal is precisely what makes people label him “political.”

The ladder of whiteness, which I’ve written about before, doesn’t stop at America’s borders. It scales globally. It ranks cultures according to proximity to Western power, palatability to white audiences, and willingness to assimilate.

Latinidad occupies an unstable position on that ladder. It is often celebrated as flavour, rhythm, passion - but only when stripped of history. Spanish is welcomed as an aesthetic until it becomes a demand. Brownness is celebrated until it asserts itself.

Bad Bunny breaks the unspoken contract.

He doesn’t translate.
He doesn’t dilute.
He doesn’t apologise for centring Puerto Rico instead of America.

And yet the world adjusted.

That adjustment is the real story.

Because for decades, Latin artists were told that crossover success required compromise. English lyrics. Neutral politics. A softened accent. A digestible identity. Success was conditional on becoming legible to the U.S. mainstream.

Bad Bunny reversed that logic.

He didn’t assimilate.
He expanded the centre.

And in doing so, he exposed how fragile the idea of “apolitical art” actually is.

When white or Western artists dominate globally, their work is framed as universal. When artists from colonised or marginalised places do the same, their work is framed as political - as if culture can only be neutral when it aligns with power.

But neutrality is never neutral.
It’s alignment without naming it.

This is why Bad Bunny’s work resonates far beyond music. His refusal to detach Puerto Rican identity from global success mirrors a broader reckoning: a growing unwillingness to perform palatable versions of selfhood for Western comfort.

The island’s relationship with the United States has been defined by extraction and neglect. From the imposition of U.S. citizenship in 1917, to decades of economic dependency, to the devastating mishandling of Hurricane Maria - where thousands died while aid stalled - Puerto Rican lives have been treated as administratively expendable.

Disaster response exposed what colonial governance always does: who is protected, who is delayed, and whose suffering can be absorbed without consequence.

Bad Bunny doesn’t let that context disappear.

He names it in his music. He funds it in his activism. He amplifies it in his platforming. And crucially, he refuses to package it as a lesson for outsiders. Puerto Rico is not a case study. It is home.

This refusal disrupts another powerful myth: that global audiences are entitled to access without responsibility.

We are used to consuming culture detached from consequence. We stream music. We adopt slang. We borrow aesthetics. We rarely interrogate the systems that made those cultures vulnerable in the first place.

Bad Bunny challenges that consumption model.

He doesn’t offer culture as export without context.
He doesn’t flatten Puerto Rico into brandable resilience.
He insists that joy, anger, pleasure, and politics can coexist - without explanation.

And that insistence feels threatening in a world that prefers its politics either abstracted or aestheticised.

The backlash, when it comes, is predictable. Accusations of divisiveness. Claims that he should “stick to music.” Complaints that he’s “alienating” parts of his audience.

But alienation is not always a failure.
Sometimes it’s clarity.

Bad Bunny’s work forces a confrontation with a truth many would rather ignore: that the United States is not just a country, but an empire - and that its cultural dominance is inseparable from its political power.

What happens in Puerto Rico does not stay in Puerto Rico.

A second draft emerges when the first story stops holding. When the myth of neutrality collapses under scrutiny. When progress, success, and universality are revealed to be conditional - offered selectively, withdrawn easily.

Puerto Rico has lived inside someone else’s first draft for over a century. Bad Bunny represents a refusal to revise himself to fit it.

He doesn’t ask to be understood on Western terms.
He doesn’t perform gratitude for access.
He doesn’t translate pain into palatable soundbites.

He insists on presence without permission.

And that insistence matters.

Because we are living in a moment where the demand to “stay out of politics” is rarely neutral. It often means: don’t disrupt power, don’t name hierarchy, don’t remind us that comfort is unevenly distributed.

There’s a moment that captures this refusal perfectly. Onstage, Bad Bunny once closed a performance by saying “God bless America” - and then proceeded to name the countries of Latin America alongside the United States. It was subtle, deliberate, and unmistakable. For years, he has also performed wearing a bulletproof vest, a visual reminder that speaking openly about colonial violence, state neglect, and systemic harm is not an abstract risk for everyone. Sitting at a table alone at The Grammys because the death threats he received were so severe and heightened. Yet he keeps naming it. Keeps centring Puerto Rico. Keeps refusing to soften his politics into symbolism that feels safe for global consumption. The message isn’t theatrical - it’s structural. Presence does not require permission. Silence is not the price of success.

And in doing so, he offers a quiet lesson: that culture doesn’t become powerful by erasing its history, but by refusing to be detached from it.

This is not about celebrity activism.
It’s about narrative control.

It’s about who gets to exist loudly without being accused of excess.
Who gets to be universal without becoming invisible.
Who is allowed to succeed without translating themselves into something safer.

Because what people actually want isn’t the truth.

They want a manageable version of it.

A version that explains just enough.

A version that keeps everyone else comfortable.

The myth of the tell-all isn’t that people are afraid to speak - it’s that we pretend speaking freely would be welcomed if they did.

If you’ve ever watched a public figure promise “full transparency” only to deliver a carefully worded statement that reveals nothing of substance, you already know this. If you’ve ever been encouraged to “open up” in a family, a relationship, or a workplace - and then quietly punished for what you revealed - you definitely know it.

We don’t live in a culture that rewards honesty.

We live in a culture that rewards control.

And lately, I’ve been thinking about how much energy goes into maintaining that illusion.

Take the modern obsession with the tell-all memoir, the explosive interview, the long-awaited confession. We say we want answers. We say we want clarity. We say we want people to finally “tell their side.”

But what we’re really doing is waiting for permission.

Permission to forgive.

Permission to judge.

Permission to move on without feeling complicit.

We don’t want the mess. We want the conclusion.

That’s why so many truths never actually get told - not because people are hiding something dramatic, but because they understand the cost of saying it plainly would be higher than staying silent. Silence, at least, can be misinterpreted. The truth can’t.

And we can see this most clearly in pop culture - in the way we hover around people who might tell us something, without ever really wanting them to.

Think about Meghan Markle. She is accused of “controlling the narrative” when she speaks, and manipulative when she doesn’t. Her honesty is framed as suspicious; her restraint as strategic. Or take the Beckhams. Every headline feels charged with the expectation of a tell-all that no one actually wants to hear. Silence is read as dignity. Speaking would be read as betrayal. The fantasy of the perfect family remains intact precisely because the truth stays contained.

And then there’s the Murdoch family, endlessly dramatised through Succession - a show we happily consume because it allows us to watch power, trauma, and inheritance implode at a safe fictional distance. We love the allegory. We would be deeply uncomfortable with the reality. We prefer truth filtered through prestige television, not actual accountability.

We don’t reward truth.

We reward containment.

The moment honesty threatens the image, the brand, the family myth, or the audience’s sense of coherence, it stops being brave and starts being “too much.”

That’s the part no one says out loud.

And this doesn’t just happen in celebrity culture. It happens everywhere.

In families where certain topics are permanently off-limits - not because they’re irrelevant, but because they would change the emotional hierarchy if spoken aloud.

In relationships where “honesty” is encouraged only up to the point where it disrupts the agreed narrative.

In workplaces that champion “open dialogue” right up until someone names the thing everyone benefits from not naming.

Honesty is celebrated in theory. In practice, it’s tightly policed.

Which is why I don’t believe we’re actually living in an era of oversharing. I think we’re living in an era of selective disclosure - where we reveal just enough to appear evolved, healed, self-aware, without ever relinquishing control of the story.

We’ve learned the language of vulnerability.

We know how to say the right phrases.

We know how to frame pain as growth and conflict as a lesson.

It’s not that people aren’t telling stories anymore.

It’s that they’re editing them in real time.

And sometimes, that editing isn’t even cynical - it’s protective.

Because telling the full truth isn’t just about courage. It’s about fallout.

The fallout of being misunderstood.

The fallout of being disbelieved.

The fallout of realising that once something is said, it can’t be contained.

This is why so many “tell-alls” never come. Not because people lack honesty, but because they understand that truth doesn’t automatically bring resolution. Sometimes it just creates a new set of expectations you never agreed to meet.

And sometimes, the most honest thing you can do is refuse to perform your interior life for public consumption at all.

This is where the fantasy of the tell-all really collapses.

I find myself increasingly interested in what people don’t say. In the pauses. The omissions. The boundaries. The stories that remain unfinished not because they lack substance, but because they refuse spectacle.

There’s a quiet integrity in that - a kind of self-trust that doesn’t need public validation.

Which brings me back to Second Draft.

A second draft isn’t a tell-all. It’s not the explosive first version where everything spills out at once. It’s the revision stage - where you decide what actually belongs on the page, what needs context, and what isn’t yours to perform.

Second drafts are where honesty becomes intentional.

Where you stop writing for applause and start writing for accuracy. Where clarity comes not from saying everything, but from saying the right things, in the right order, for the right reasons.

We’ve been sold the idea that truth must be loud to be real. That silence is inherently suspicious. That if you’re not explaining yourself constantly, you’re hiding something.

I don’t buy that anymore.

Some truths are still in revision.

Some stories aren’t finished yet.

Some things deserve privacy not because they’re shameful - but because they’re sacred.

And maybe the most radical thing you can do in a culture addicted to confession is decide that your life isn’t a press release.

We were promised a version of life that doesn’t seem to exist anywhere except in retrospect.

Not even nostalgia - marketing.

The idea of having it all was never vague. It was specific. A career that fulfilled you without consuming you. A relationship that felt electric but safe. A sense that, by your early thirties, something would click into place and stay there.

Instead, most people I know feel permanently behind.

Not failing - just… tired.

There’s a strange silence around this exhaustion. Everyone keeps performing forward motion, even as the ground keeps shifting underneath us. We trade tips on productivity, wellness, and manifestation like they’re flotation devices, quietly wondering why we’re still struggling to stay afloat.

The fantasy didn’t collapse.
It multiplied.

Social media didn’t invent the pressure to “have it all” - it industrialised it. Suddenly, every version of success was visible at once. Career women with glowing skin and time to cook. Couples who look effortless and emotionally fluent. People who appear both ambitious and well-rested. Lives that suggest the problem isn’t the system - it’s your mindset.

If you were better organised.
More healed.
More disciplined.
More positive.

But here’s the thing no one likes to say out loud: the fantasy was never designed to be lived inside.

It was designed to keep you moving.

“Hustle culture” wasn’t just about work - it was about worth. Productivity became morality. Rest became something you had to earn. Burnout was reframed as ambition, especially for women, who were told they could finally have everything as long as they did it gracefully.

Smile while you drown.

What makes this era uniquely exhausting isn’t that life is hard - life has always been hard - it’s that difficulty is framed as personal mismanagement. Structural problems are repackaged as individual shortcomings. You’re not underpaid; you’re under-leveraging. You’re not lonely; you’re not dating intentionally enough. You’re not overwhelmed; you just need a better routine.

There’s no room in that story for reality.

No space for grief. For uncertainty. For the fact that many of the systems we were meant to succeed inside of - work, dating, housing, even friendship - no longer resemble the versions we were raised to expect.

And so we adapt quietly. We recalibrate our expectations while pretending we haven’t. We lower the bar internally, while continuing to perform optimism externally. We joke about being exhausted as if it’s a personality trait rather than a warning signal.

The fantasy of “having it all” didn’t just fail us - it trained us to blame ourselves for its collapse.

That’s why so many people feel unmoored right now. Not lost, exactly. Just suspended between versions of life - the one we were promised, and the one we’re actually living.

Which brings me to why this feels like a Second Draft moment.

A second draft isn’t about reinvention. It’s about recognition.

It’s the point where you stop trying to force your life into a narrative that no longer fits, and start asking harder questions about what you actually want - stripped of expectation, performance, and borrowed definitions of success.

Maybe “having it all” was never the goal.
Maybe having enough - with honesty, autonomy, and room to breathe - is radical now.

Not louder.
Not shinier.
Just truer.

The exhaustion so many of us feel isn’t a failure of ambition. It’s a signal that the fantasy is wearing thin - and that revision is overdue.

This isn’t the end of the story.
It’s the part where we stop pretending the first version worked.

And begin again - without the lie.

At some point, commitment stopped being aspirational and started feeling reckless.

We confuse optionality with freedom and movement with progress, even as people feel increasingly unanchored.

The culture rewards this. Ambiguity is framed as nuance. Hesitation is praised as discernment. Decisiveness - especially in women - is quietly recoded as rigidity, desperation, or lack of self-awareness. To want clarity is to risk looking uncool.

But there is a cost to permanent non-choice.

When nothing is chosen, nothing can settle. There is no ground to stand on, only motion. A life lived entirely in preview mode never generates meaning - only possibility.

You can see this play out even in pop culture.

The recent Beckham family fallout fascinated people not because it was explosive, but because it wasn’t. No tell-all. No dramatic rupture. Just distance, silence, careful PR. A family brand that had perfected cohesion now quietly negotiating the discomfort of difference.

No one wants to fully commit to the truth anymore - not publicly, not privately. Everyone leaves room to revise the story later.

Soft-launching has become a cultural instinct.

But revision still requires authorship.

A second draft is not endless editing. At some point, something has to be submitted - not because it’s perfect, but because meaning only emerges when a choice is lived long enough to be tested.

This is the part soft-launch culture avoids telling you: indecision is still a decision. It just delays responsibility.

There is a difference between flexibility and avoidance. Between openness and fear. Between keeping options alive and refusing to stand anywhere long enough to be known.

Second Draft isn’t an argument for rigidity. It’s a reminder that clarity doesn’t arrive through hovering. It arrives through contact - with consequence, with friction, with the possibility of being wrong.

Because a life permanently kept “for now” eventually becomes a life that never quite begins.

Soft-launch if you must. Pause if you need to. Revise when the first version no longer fits.

But don’t confuse endless rehearsal with living.

At some point, you have to press publish.

It loves a narrative in which inequality is a glitch, not a design choice. It prefers the idea that “things got out of hand,” rather than the more unnerving truth: a system can be functioning exactly as intended and still be morally obscene.

It is often discussed as if it’s merely a policy failure - an overreaction to crime, a bureaucratic monster that grew too big, an expensive mistake that now needs trimming. But if you trace it properly, it reads less like a mistake and more like an adaptation: a modern mechanism for managing race, labor, and social control after older mechanisms became publicly unacceptable.

If that sounds dramatic, it’s because the scale is dramatic.

By spring 2024, Vera estimates about 1.8 million people were incarcerated in the United States.
And the “whole pie” view - prisons, jails, youth facilities, immigration detention, and more - still shows well over 1.9 million people behind bars on any given day, depending on how you count the systems America uses to contain people.

That is not a small social issue. That is a governing strategy.

1) The part everyone forgets: the system didn’t start in 1980

When people talk about mass incarceration, they often begin in the late 20th century - Reagan, crack, the “tough on crime” era, “war on drugs” - because that’s when the numbers spike. That spike matters. But it didn’t appear out of nowhere. It landed on a country whose relationship to race has always been structural.

America is not “247 years old” in the way people casually claim it is. The United States as a nation-state dates to 1776, yes - but it was built on centuries of colonial settlement, racial slavery, and Indigenous dispossession that began long before independence. The legal and economic infrastructure of race was already in place by the time “America” became a brand.

That matters because mass incarceration didn’t invent racial hierarchy - it modernized it.

A familiar pattern runs through U.S. history:

• A racial order is enforced (slavery, Jim Crow).

• Public pressure makes the order harder to defend outright.

• A new system replaces it, dressed in the language of safety, morality, or legality - and it still produces racial containment.
  

So yes, the prison boom has a specific political timeline. But it also has a longer cultural one: it sits inside an American tradition of re-labeling control as virtue.

2) 1980 onward: how the prison state became normal

From the 1980s onward, U.S. political life became obsessed with crime as a story - not crime as an economic outcome, not crime as a public health problem, not crime as a symptom - but crime as a moral failing that required punishment to restore order.

That story did a lot of work.

It helped justify mandatory minimum sentences, three-strikes laws, aggressive drug enforcement, and the normalization of long-term imprisonment as a default response to social problems. It also made prison feel like an inevitable feature of modern life - like roads or hospitals - rather than a choice.

The numbers reflect that choice.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports the U.S. prison population was 1,254,200 at year end 2023, up 2% from 2022.

That’s prisons alone - not jails, not probation/parole, not immigration detention.

If you want to understand why mass incarceration became so powerful, you have to understand that it didn’t grow just because of “crime.” It grew because punishment became politically profitable. It offered a clean villain. It offered a simple moral. It offered a way to perform control.

And it offered something else, too: a legally acceptable way to produce racial hierarchy without explicitly saying the word race.

3) The “crime of being Black” isn’t a metaphor - it’s a pattern

When I wrote my MA thesis, I focused on mass incarceration from 1980 onward because that’s where the machinery accelerates - and because that era is often sold to us as neutral. “The war on drugs.” “The crack epidemic.” “Rising crime.” A set of facts, supposedly, leading to a set of policies.

But the outcomes were never neutral.

The criminal legal system has repeatedly produced patterns that look like this:

• Black communities are over-policed and surveilled.

• Similar behavior yields different contact rates with police.

• Contact increases the likelihood of arrest, charges, plea deals, and records.

• A record then affects housing, employment, voting rights, family stability - which increases vulnerability to future contact.
  

It’s a loop - not just for individuals, but for entire communities.

And when people ask, “Why doesn’t it change?” one answer is: because the system isn’t built to rehabilitate or restore. It’s built to process.

Plea bargains are part of that processing. So are cash bail systems. So are probation rules that are easy to violate. The system doesn’t need everyone to be “guilty” in the grand moral sense - it only needs them to be administratively manageable.

4) The afterlife of incarceration: punishment that follows you home

One of the biggest misunderstandings about mass incarceration is that it ends at release.

It doesn’t.

A conviction can mean exclusion from jobs, housing, education, financial aid, and even basic civic participation. And the voting piece matters because it reveals how punishment and democracy overlap.

The Sentencing Project estimates about 4.0 million Americans were disenfranchised in 2024 due to felony convictions.

This is one of the quietest forms of structural power: you build a system that disproportionately criminalizes certain groups, then you legally reduce their political voice, and you call it “law and order.”

That isn’t just punishment. That’s governance.

5) Why this gets worse when politics turns theatrical

There’s a reason this topic feels newly urgent again - and it’s not because the system suddenly became racist in 2016. It’s because the public language around punishment and belonging has become louder, cruder, and more confident.

When a political movement frames cruelty as strength, punishment becomes a cultural mood.

You see it in:

• the celebration of detention and deportation as spectacle,

• the use of “invasion” rhetoric around migration,

• the normalization of state violence as “necessary,”

• and the insistence that empathy is weakness.
  

And because the U.S. is not just a country but an exporter of culture, its political aesthetics travel.

When American politics normalizes contempt and racial scapegoating, it gives cover to far-right movements elsewhere - not because those movements didn’t exist, but because the world’s loudest empire has demonstrated that you can say the quiet part loudly and still win power.

This matters in Europe. It matters in Ireland. It matters anywhere a society is deciding what kinds of people “belong” - and what kinds of suffering can be ignored.

6) What changed after I wrote it - and what didn’t

When I wrote my MA thesis in 2019, the global reckoning that would follow had not yet happened. The phrase Black Lives Matter existed, but it had not yet been forced into the centre of international consciousness. It had not yet become unavoidable.

That changed in 2020.

The murder of George Floyd, and the scale of the protests that followed, made the realities of American racial violence visible to people who had previously been able to look away. For a brief moment, there was an insistence - from institutions, corporations, and governments - that something fundamental had been exposed. Statements were made. Language shifted. Awareness surged.

And then, just as predictably, the system recalibrated.

Police budgets returned. Prison populations stabilised rather than collapsed. Reform language softened into managerial tweaks. What had been framed as a moral rupture was absorbed as a public relations problem.

Looking back now, what strikes me most is not that mass incarceration survived this moment - it’s that it barely paused. The machinery did not misunderstand the critique. It understood it perfectly and continued operating.

This is why mass incarceration cannot be treated as a policy error waiting for the right fix. It is a structural solution to an unresolved racial anxiety - one that adapts whenever its legitimacy is challenged. The names change. The language updates. The outcomes remain strikingly consistent.

That is what hindsight clarifies. Not that we didn’t know enough then - but that the system was never designed to listen.

7) Why this essay belongs in Second Draft

If you’re wondering how this essay ties into the ethos of Second Draft, it’s simple: a second draft is what happens after you stop believing the first story.

The first story America tells is that it is always progressing - always improving, always becoming more free, more fair, more enlightened. And because that story is so powerful, people assume any evidence against it is an “exception” or a “setback.”

But what if it isn’t?

What if the first draft was never honest about the structure underneath?

A second draft is not the part where you add prettier language. It’s the part where you re-read what’s already there and admit what it actually says.

Mass incarceration is one of those structural truths: it reveals what a society fears, what it values, and who it is willing to sacrifice to maintain its self-image. It also reveals something even more uncomfortable: that “safety” can be a narrative used to justify containment, and that democracy can coexist with the systematic removal of certain people’s freedom and civic voice.

I’m not claiming to be an expert. I’m not claiming to speak over lived experience that isn’t mine. I’m writing as someone who studied U.S. history and politics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and who, six years later, is still reading, learning, and unlearning every day. Much of that education now comes from listening - especially to African Americans and other marginalised communities - and taking their lived experiences seriously as sources of knowledge, not just commentary.

Following the trajectory of U.S news and politics is essential. Because the U.S. doesn’t just govern itself. It shapes global culture, global discourse, and the boundaries of what the world thinks is normal.

And if you’re living through a moment where cruelty is being rebranded as realism, and repression is being marketed as stability, then understanding mass incarceration isn’t “an American issue.”

It’s a way of reading the world.

The “ladder of whiteness” is not a metaphor for individual prejudice. It is a way of describing how racial hierarchy operates structurally - through proximity to power, protection, and legitimacy - rather than through explicit belief alone.

In the United States, whiteness has never functioned as a fixed identity. It has functioned as a ranking system. Some groups are granted conditional inclusion over time, while others remain permanently marked as suspect, disposable, or dangerous. Movement up the ladder is not achieved by dismantling the hierarchy, but by distancing oneself from those placed below.

Historically, this is how Irish, Italian, and Jewish communities were absorbed into whiteness - not through universal equality, but through assimilation that required alignment with dominant norms and, crucially, separation from Blackness and Indigeneity. Climbing the ladder did not challenge the system. It stabilised it.

The ladder persists because it adapts. When overt racial language becomes socially unacceptable, it reappears as “law and order,” “border security,” “neighbourhood schools,” “civility,” or “cultural fit.” The language shifts, but the logic remains intact: some lives are framed as worthy of protection, others as problems to be managed.

Understanding the ladder matters because racism does not only operate at moments of crisis or extremism. It operates quietly - through policy, through culture, through who is granted the benefit of the doubt. It is most powerful when it feels invisible, neutral, or simply “the way things are.”

This essay begins from that premise: that hierarchy did not return. It was always there - waiting for the moment it could speak more loudly again.

There is a persistent myth that racism in the United States moves in cycles - that it disappears, returns, softens, hardens, recedes, and comes back again. This framing is comforting because it implies interruption. It suggests that there are eras of progress punctuated by moments of regression, rather than a continuous structure that merely changes its tone.

But racism in the U.S. has never left.
What changes is its volume.

The ladder of whiteness - the unspoken hierarchy that ranks proximity to power, safety, and legitimacy - has not reappeared. It has been amplified. Made louder. Less coded. Less polite. Less embarrassed about itself.

MAGA and the ladder of whiteness

What we are witnessing now is not a return to something old, but a stripping away of restraint.

The United States was built on race - not as a flaw in the system, but as one of its organising principles. From the moment colonial identity required differentiation from Indigenous populations and enslaved Africans, race became a tool for governance, labour control, land ownership, and political coherence. Whiteness was never merely a descriptor. It was a credential.

And like all credentials, it operates hierarchically.

The ladder has always existed: Anglo at the top, followed by conditional inclusion for groups deemed assimilable, and permanent exclusion for those marked as disposable. Over time, some groups were allowed to climb - Irish, Italian, Jewish communities - but only through distancing themselves from Blackness, Indigeneity, and later, from newly racialised immigrant populations.

Climbing the ladder never dismantled it. It simply reinforced its legitimacy.

What feels different now is that the language of hierarchy has become explicit again. The euphemisms have thinned. The dog whistles are barely whistles at all.

MAGA did not invent this.
It removed the need to hide it.

Trump-era rhetoric did not introduce racism into American life; it validated its public expression. It gave permission - not just to believe certain things privately, but to say them aloud without shame. Immigration discourse became openly racialised. ICE was reframed not as a bureaucratic arm of enforcement, but as a moral project - one that justified family separation, detention camps, and mass deportation as necessary acts of preservation.

Preservation of what, exactly, was never ambiguous.

At the same time, global politics revealed how racial hierarchy operates beyond U.S. borders. The language used to justify Israeli state violence against Palestinians - the framing of Palestinians as inherently threatening, irrational, or disposable - mirrors the same racial logic that underpins American policing, border control, and incarceration. Dehumanisation becomes administratively tidy when a population has already been placed low enough on the ladder.

This is not about importing conflicts.
It is about recognising shared grammar.

And that grammar does not stay contained.

Across Europe, far-right movements have grown louder - not more numerous, but more confident. Groups like the EDL, AfD, and other nationalist factions have taken cues from American political theatre. When racism is normalised at the level of empire, it grants cover elsewhere. It tells people who already hold these views that they are no longer fringe - that they are simply “saying what everyone’s thinking.”

This is how hierarchy spreads: not through invention, but through permission.

One of the most dangerous myths about racism is that it belongs to extremists. In reality, the ladder survives through moderation. Through people who do not see themselves as racist because they benefit quietly. Through policies defended as pragmatic. Through laughter at the wrong joke. Through silence when naming would be uncomfortable.

Whiteness functions best when it appears invisible - when it frames itself as neutral, rational, objective. But invisibility is a luxury afforded only to those safely placed above scrutiny. When whiteness feels threatened, it becomes visible again. Defensive. Loud. Aggressive.

What we are seeing now is not chaos.
It is coherence.

The carceral system, immigration enforcement, voter suppression, housing policy, foreign policy - these are not disconnected issues. They are different expressions of the same logic: that some lives require containment, while others require protection.

My education and interest in the U.S.

Which brings me to why I care so deeply about this - and why I write about it here.

I studied American history and politics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. My MA thesis focused specifically on mass incarceration and the racialised criminal justice system in the United States from 1980 onward - a period marked by bipartisan policy decisions that dramatically expanded the prison system while framing crime as a moral failure rather than a structural outcome.

I am not an expert. I do not claim authority over lived experience that is not my own. But I am deeply invested in understanding how power functions - how narratives are constructed, legitimised, and exported.

The United States is approximately 247 years old as a nation-state, built on top of centuries of colonial violence that predate its founding. Despite its relative youth, it dominates global culture, media, military power, and political discourse. Decisions made within its borders reverberate everywhere - shaping economies, ideologies, and social movements far beyond its geography.

That is why what happens there matters to all of us.

When racism becomes louder in the U.S., it gives permission elsewhere. When authoritarian rhetoric is normalised, it travels. When cruelty is framed as strength, it finds admirers.

This is not abstract. It affects migration policy in Europe. It emboldens far-right groups. It reshapes public tolerance for state violence. It narrows the range of acceptable empathy.

Second Drafts

This is also why this essay belongs here - under Second Draft - rather than existing as a standalone political argument.

A second draft is what happens when the story we were told about progress no longer holds. When the promised arc - enlightenment, equality, resolution - fails to materialise, and we are left with the quieter work of reassessment. The mythology of exceptionalism has cracked. The language of neutrality has thinned. What remains is the underlying structure, newly visible.

Second drafts are not optimistic by default.
They are more honest.

They recognise that the first version was written under assumptions that no longer apply - that power would eventually correct itself, that inclusion would naturally expand, that time alone would do the work. When those assumptions collapse, revision becomes unavoidable.

This essay is not about announcing a solution. It is about refusing the comfort of denial. It is about understanding that hierarchy does not disappear simply because it becomes unfashionable to name it. And it is about recognising that the work of a second draft - personal or political - is not reinvention, but reckoning.

Second Draft exists to sit in that uncomfortable space. To resist tidy narratives. To examine the systems beneath culture, beneath language, beneath identity. To ask what survives when the volume is turned down - and what becomes impossible to ignore when it is turned up.

This is not the end of the story.
It is the revision stage.

There is no neutral position here.
There never has been.

The question is not whether you are on the ladder.
It is whether you are willing to name it - and what you are prepared to do once you do.

There is a particular kind of sentence that has become increasingly common in conversation.

It usually begins with fluency.
With awareness.
With the reassuring cadence of someone who has done the work.

“I know this is a trauma response.”
“That’s my attachment style.”
“I’ve unpacked this in therapy.”
“I understand where this comes from.”

These statements are not wrong. In many cases, they are accurate. They reflect a generation that has learned to name its inner life with remarkable precision. A generation that has been encouraged - finally - to take its psychological landscape seriously.

And yet, something curious is happening alongside this fluency.

We are explaining ourselves more than ever.
And interrupting ourselves less.

Therapy has given us language. But language, increasingly, has become a place to rest.

I say this as someone who believes in therapy. Who goes. Who values it. Who has found it clarifying, grounding, and at times genuinely transformative. This is not an argument against psychological work. It is an observation about what happens when insight becomes culturally aestheticised - when explanation itself begins to stand in for change.

We live in a moment of extraordinary trauma literacy. Most people I know are in therapy, have been in therapy, or are conversant enough with its frameworks to speak fluently about their inner architecture. Terms that once belonged to clinical settings now circulate casually: nervous systems, boundaries, triggers, dissociation, reparenting.

This is, in many ways, a corrective. Previous generations were expected to endure without vocabulary. Silence was framed as strength. Damage was absorbed privately and passed down unexamined. The emergence of shared language has allowed people to recognise harm, to contextualise it, to refuse self-blame.

That matters.

But something else has happened alongside this progress.

Explanation has become a form of insulation.

We have grown skilled at narrating ourselves in ways that feel responsible, self-aware, even admirable - without necessarily destabilising the behaviours those narratives describe. We can articulate our patterns beautifully while remaining deeply loyal to them. We can describe our wounds in detail while organising our lives to protect them.

Insight, in this configuration, does not always lead to movement. Sometimes it creates a resting place.

This is not a personal failing. It is a cultural pattern.

We are living inside conditions that produce chronic stress rather than acute resolution. Economic precarity. Political instability. Social surveillance. Endless crisis cycles. Under these conditions, therapy often becomes less about transformation and more about management. About coping. About survival.

Understanding yourself, in this context, can feel like control.

If you can name the reason, you can tolerate the outcome.
If you can explain the behaviour, you can live alongside it.
If you can diagnose the pattern, you can make peace with its persistence.

But there is a difference between self-knowledge and self-disruption.

Therapy gives us mirrors. It does not, on its own, dismantle the rooms we are standing in.

One of the quieter risks of our current therapeutic culture is the way it can subtly moralise awareness. Being able to explain yourself now functions as a kind of social currency. Fluency signals responsibility. Reflection signals goodness. To be self-aware is to be trustworthy.

And yet awareness, on its own, asks very little of us.

It does not require us to change our environments.
It does not require us to relinquish comfort.
It does not require us to tolerate uncertainty.

In fact, explanation often protects us from those demands.

When we say, “I know why I’m like this,” we are sometimes saying, “And this is as far as I can go right now.” When we name something as trauma, we may be seeking compassion - but also exemption. When we categorise our responses too quickly, we can unintentionally freeze them in place.

This is not because therapy has failed us, but because therapy has been asked to do cultural work it was never designed to do.

It was never meant to replace social structures.
It was never meant to compensate for economic instability.
It was never meant to make broken systems livable indefinitely.

And yet, increasingly, that is what it is being used for.

We are encouraged to regulate ourselves inside conditions that remain fundamentally dysregulating. To process individually what is produced collectively. To heal privately while the sources of harm remain publicly intact.

In this context, explanation becomes a survival strategy.

And survival strategies, while necessary, are not the same as transformation.

This is where the distinction matters.

Understanding can soften self-judgment. It can create compassion. It can open doors. But real change - the kind that alters the trajectory of a life - often requires friction. Loss. Discomfort. A reorganisation of loyalty. A willingness to act without full clarity.

Therapy can prepare you for that moment.
It cannot substitute for it.

There is a reason healing language feels less precise than trauma language. Trauma has edges. It has origins, patterns, narratives. Healing is slower, vaguer, harder to narrate. It unfolds in choices that don’t look impressive. In repetitions that gradually shift. In tolerating the absence of certainty.

It does not arrive with a clean explanation.

And so many of us live in a state of near-readiness. Highly articulated. Deeply reflective. Perpetually processing. Waiting for the moment when understanding will finally tip into movement.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

The danger is not that we know too much about ourselves. The danger is that we mistake knowing for doing. That we confuse explanation with exit. That we use language to remain inside patterns we have already outgrown.

This is not an argument for abandoning therapy. It is an invitation to notice how we are using it.

Is insight leading somewhere?
Or is it functioning as a pause button?
Is awareness opening possibility - or quietly closing the case?

For a generation shaped by instability, therapy has offered something invaluable: permission to feel, to contextualise, to stop blaming ourselves for damage we did not cause.

The next task is harder.

It is to decide what we do with that understanding once we have it.

Not everything that makes sense is meant to stay.

And not every explanation deserves permanence.

Sometimes the work is no longer to understand why - but to decide what comes next, even without a perfect framework to support the choice.

That step is quieter. Less aesthetic. Harder to narrate.

But it is where explanation ends - and change, if it comes at all, begins.

There is a moment that comes after the spectacle is over, when the lights have come back on, and the crowd has dispersed, and you realise that whatever just ended was holding more meaning than you admitted at the time.

Not because it was perfect. Not because it was healthy. But because it provided structure - a set of references that made life feel interpretable.

We tend to recognise eras only in retrospect. While we are living inside them, they feel endless: repetitive, slightly disappointing, vaguely unresolved. It is only once they dissolve that we begin to catalogue them properly, assigning names, aesthetics, narratives. We smooth their contradictions into something legible enough to explain.

But living through the ending of an era is different from narrating it later. It feels less like closure and more like disorientation. A sense that something has finished without offering replacement instructions.

Culturally, we are surrounded by endings right now.

Long-running stories conclude without catharsis. Institutions lose credibility faster than they can reinvent themselves. The myths that once organised adulthood -career progression, romantic inevitability, upward mobility -no longer function as promised, yet continue to be referenced as if they do.

We are living in the aftermath of belief systems that have expired, still performing rituals they once justified.

When a generational television saga concluded, audiences did not respond with celebration or satisfaction. They responded with a strange mix of grief and relief. The story did not deliver redemption arcs or moral clarity. No one emerged transformed in a way that could be easily admired. Power remained corrosive. Love remained conditional. The cycle did not break.

What unsettled viewers most was not the bleakness of the ending, but its familiarity.

There was no grand revelation -only confirmation.

The characters ended where they began, not because they failed to grow, but because growth was never structurally supported. The systems surrounding them rewarded repetition, not reflection. Change was not impossible; it was simply incompatible with the environment.

This is an uncomfortable mirror.

This is precisely why The Sopranos still lingers as one of the most honest endings in television history.

The discomfort of its final moments did not come from ambiguity alone, but from refusal. Refusal to reward self-knowledge with redemption. Refusal to pretend that insight naturally produces change.

Tony Soprano acquires language. He becomes articulate about his childhood, his panic attacks, his rage. He learns to describe himself with increasing sophistication. But none of this interrupts his behaviour. Therapy does not destabilise him; it stabilises him. Awareness becomes insulation.

Institutions acknowledge their failures while reproducing them. Leaders speak the language of reform while preserving the conditions that make reform impossible. Transparency has increased, but consequence has not. Awareness circulates freely; accountability does not.

This produces a strange political atmosphere: one of permanent diagnosis without treatment. A culture that knows exactly what is wrong, but remains unable -or unwilling - to interrupt the systems that benefit from delay.

Here again, the cycle persists not because we are ignorant, but because disruption is costly.

What we are witnessing, across culture and politics alike, is not stagnation, but managed continuity. Change that gestures without displacing. Progress that remains safely theoretical.

For individuals, this often registers as personal confusion.

People speak about feeling “behind,” when in reality they are responding appropriately to unstable conditions. They blame themselves for not progressing smoothly through a world that no longer offers smooth progression. They interpret uncertainty as failure rather than context.

But the problem is not that nothing is happening.

It is that we are living inside a prolonged middle - a chapter that refuses resolution.

Historically, moments like this are rarely recognised as eras while they are unfolding. After periods of overconfidence, meaning must be rebuilt slowly. With attention. With discernment. With an awareness of fragility.

This kind of rebuilding does not offer spectacle. It does not reward speed. It does not lend itself to slogans.

Instead, it requires editing.

You revise assumptions. You remove expectations that were inherited rather than chosen. You notice where your desires were shaped by scarcity, fear, or performance rather than truth. You begin again -not with enthusiasm, but with accuracy.

This process offers little external validation. There are no milestones to mark completion. No signal that confirms you have arrived at the correct interpretation.

There is only the ongoing task of paying attention.

The danger of rushing through this phase is not stagnation. It is misidentification. When we prematurely declare an era “over” without understanding what it gave us -and what it took -we risk repeating it under a different name.

Becoming, in this sense, is not a breakthrough. It is an accumulation of small, often unremarkable adjustments. A growing refusal to participate in dynamics that no longer feel honest. A willingness to tolerate ambiguity without immediately resolving it.

If earlier eras taught us how to perform coherence, this one may be asking us to learn how to see.

And if the ending feels unresolved -even anticlimactic - that may be the point.

There is a particular grief that comes with realising you don’t get a clean beginning.

Illness. Loss. Burnout. A relationship that didn’t become what it promised. A career that hollowed out instead of expanding. A body that stopped behaving. A sense that time moved on without asking your permission.

You don’t start over after those things.
You revise.

A second draft is not a reset. It is not an aesthetic rebrand. It does not erase the first version. It works with what already exists - the sentences that didn’t land, the paragraphs that wandered, the ideas that were half-formed but sincere. It accepts that something was written in good faith, even if it no longer fits.

We are offered language like reinvention, glow-ups, soft eras, fresh starts. We are encouraged to package change as ease, as lightness, as something that looks good on camera. But real change rarely looks like that. It looks hesitant. It looks contradictory. It looks like learning how to live with what you didn’t plan for.

The second draft is not about becoming someone new.
It is about becoming honest.

Honest about what was lost. Honest about what can’t be recovered. Honest about the fact that some identities expire, and others never fully form. Honest about how long it takes to feel like yourself again - and how unclear that self might be.

Pop culture has always told us who we are allowed to be, and when. There was a decade for the ingénue, a decade for the girlboss, a decade for the curated self. We were taught to track our lives alongside archetypes: the It Girl, the Wife, the Woman Who Has It All. These narratives were never neutral. They were shaped by markets, by politics, by what was profitable to desire at a given moment.

When they collapse, it can feel like personal failure - but often it is simply the end of a script that no longer makes sense.

There is a reason a stadium tour built around eras resonated so widely. Not because it was nostalgic, or impressive, or even particularly surprising - but because it offered permission. It acknowledged that a life can be made up of distinct chapters, each sincere, each complete, and none of them disqualifying the ones that came before.

What made it land wasn’t reinvention, but continuity. The same woman moved through different selves; romantic, angry, polished, feral, reflective - without apologising for the contradictions between them. She didn’t pretend the earlier versions were mistakes. She let them stand as evidence of who she was at the time. Watching it felt less like witnessing success and more like witnessing coherence after fragmentation.

That struck a nerve because so many of us are taught the opposite. We are encouraged to edit our past aggressively. To cringe at old selves. To archive the awkward chapters and pretend we emerged fully formed. But most lives don’t unfold that way. They move through phases that only make sense in hindsight, and sometimes not even then.

The idea of eras gives language to that truth. It suggests that you are allowed to change without disowning yourself. That you can honour the girl you were, the woman you became, and the person you are still becoming - all at once.

History shows us this pattern again and again. Periods of rupture produce revision. After wars, after economic crashes, after cultural exhaustion, people stop writing manifestos and start writing memoirs, essays, fragments. Art turns inward not because it has nothing to say, but because certainty has lost its authority. The most interesting work emerges not at moments of arrival, but in the aftermath - when people are trying to make sense of what just happened, and who they are now that it did.

The second draft belongs to that tradition.

It is the work that comes after belief. After ideology. After the promise that if you followed the rules, things would resolve cleanly. It is what happens when you realise that progress is not linear, that identity is not cumulative, that becoming is often subtractive. You lose things along the way - illusions, roles, versions of yourself that were propped up by timing rather than truth.

Politically, we are living through a similar reckoning. Institutions that once offered stability now feel incoherent. Authority is contested. Trust is thin. People are renegotiating what they owe to work, to family, to nation, to each other. The private sense of being “off-timeline” mirrors a collective one.

We are all, in different ways, editing the expectations we inherited.

Here, writing is not confession, and it is not content. It is a way of thinking carefully. Of sitting with discomfort long enough for clarity to emerge. Of noticing the patterns beneath taste, culture, work, identity, and desire.

Some pieces here will be personal, but never diaristic. Others will be cultural - about fashion, language, systems, taste, power - and how they shape the way we see ourselves. Some will be practical. Some will be slow.
